Bukhara Markhor

The Bukara (or Heptner’s) markhor is found only in two scattered populations; in the Kugitang Mountains at the border between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, and in the Hazratishoh and Darvaz Ranges along the Panj River at the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Hunters here will experience an exclusive adventure while contributing to both conservation e orts and local community development! These community-based conservancies have seen the Markhor population recover greatly in recent years. Surveys recorded by experts at the Academy of Sciences, government agencies in charge of wildlife conservation, and national and international NGO representatives have reported the following population trends:

  • 1018 Markhor (in 2012)

  • 1300 Markhor (in 2014)

  • 1450* Markhor (in 2016)

*Likely underestimated, as only three conservancies were surveyed

  • 1901 Markhor (in 2017)

Markhor populations are doing so well that top-ten class animals are being taken several times each year, so the world record is routinely being rewritten.
